12-year-old Elijah Zachary Lamaiyan Sime, a student at Lamaiyan Academy in Nairobi received a standing ovation from hundreds of delegates after delivering the opening remarks at a United Nations conference on Aids on Sunday. "We are children, we have rights, we have a future,".

Elijah told the UN event on Ending AIDS by 2030 that was co-chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC) has released prices of petroleum products of the various Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) as at Wednesday, September 23, 2015.

Seven Pull Out Of NDC Primary, Three Disqualified In Northern Region


Seven parliamentary aspirants of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stepped down while three others were disqualified before the party’s vetting committee in Tamale in the Northern Region.

The Northern Region recorded the highest number of parliamentary nominations with 120 aspirants filing to contest in the 31 constituencies in the region.

The stepped down candidates include Alfred Donkor Odzidzator, Tamale South constituency, Bernard Jagri Bagyepu and Noah Megma Shei both from Bimbila Constituency, and Mohammed Ali, Yagaba/Kubori Constituency.

Three parliamentary aspirants in the Western Region who were vetted by the Vetting Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been disqualified from contesting in the party’s primaries slated for November 1.

They are Mr. Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, Sefwi-Bodi constituency, Mr. Bismark Gyenim, Bibiani/Anhwiaso/Bekwai constituency and Mr. Issah Mumuni, Sefwi-Ankontombra constituency.

The overwhelming majority of Burkina Faso’s citizens prefer democracy over all other forms of government and affirm that elections are the best method for choosing leaders, new Afrobarometer survey findings show.

Clear majorities also reject military rule and believe that neighbouring countries have a duty to try to guarantee free elections and prevent human rights abuses in Burkina Faso.

Based on a national survey conducted in May 2015, these findings highlight firm public support for democracy as the country pursues its political transition in the wake of a coup d’état by the presidential guard. The African Union, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the United Nations have condemned the coup, and Leaders of other West African countries have taken an active role in mediating the crisis.

ECG To Install Prepaid Meters In Gov’t Institutions In K'si


The Ashanti Regional office of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has begun a pre-installation survey of all government institutions and agencies to assess the viability of rolling them onto prepaid meters to enable them to become more responsible to reduce the government’s indebtedness to the company.

The programme is in line with the government’s directive in 2014 to all metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to be rolled onto prepaid meters to avoid wastage of power and reduce debt.

54 Tema Students Test



Fifty-four students between 14 and 19 years tested positive for HIV in the Tema metropolis between January and September this year.

Thirteen others aged 13 to 19 also tested positive for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and have since been put on counselling and treatment.

According to health officials, children between nine and 10 years had become sexually active, but they were unable to take precautions owing to the lack of sexual education.

Koforidua Polytechnic To Close Down Over Power Cut

The Koforidua Polytechnic faces imminent closure if electricity supply to the institution is not restored.

It has been over four weeks since the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) cut power supply to the polytechnic over the nonpayment of outstanding electricity bills.

The polytechnic had earlier indicated that they spend close to 1,500 Ghana cedis daily on fuel for their power generating plant.

Teachers to be licensed before they can teach


All newly trained teachers in Ghana will soon be required to acquire licences after their professional training to be able to practise as qualified teachers, the Director of the Teacher Education Division of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr Mrs Evelyn Owusu Oduro, has said.

Currently, a draft Pre-tertiary Teacher Professional Development and Management (PTPDM) policy project is being fine-tuned to outline the implementation plan, including the framework for the career progression of teachers.

Nigerian Arrested For Killing Woman


A 29-year-old Nigerian who allegedly rammed his vehicle into a crowd of Catholic faithful at Taifa Bankyease, a suburb of Accra, killing one person in the process, has been arrested by the Kwabenya District police.

However, he admitted on Sunday that his wife, Pastor Adelaide Heward-Mills is a trained lawyer, he reiterated that she has never worked as a judge.
Bishop Heward-Mills said even if his wife had wanted to be a judge he would not have approved of it.

AN ANTICIPATED happy wedding of Prophet Albert Mensah alias Nana Kofi, Founder of the Jesus Foundation Prayer Ministry at Site 14, Community 1, Tema, rather went sour yesterday morning when a 20-year-old woman with her three-week-old baby boy disrupted the ceremony.

Judicial scandal: Justice Essel Mensah says Anas edited video


One of the High Court Judges cited in the judicial bribery scandal, Justice Essel Mensah, has denied taking a bribe of GHC5, 000 to grant bail to a murder suspect.
According to him, although he had been approached with the bribe money by undercover journalists, he rejected it.
“Anas Aremeyaw Anas for obvious reasons known to himself deleted the portion that showed him taking his money back from the edited video footage”, he said in a 25-point response to the Disciplinary Committee of the Judicial Council.

Doctors remove pellets of cocaine from disabled Nigerian

Doctors have surgically removed pellets of substances suspected to be cocaine from a 55-year old Nigerian arrested at the Kotoka International Airport on Thursday.

Okeke Ambrose Ifedilichukwu who is a physically challenged man, is currently in a stable condition at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, TV3 sources at the Narcotics Control Board has revealed.

Details on the number of pellets removed have not yet been disclosed. Initial attempts to get him to expel the substances failed as he was said to be uncooperative.

Prof. Kwesi Prempeh wants hearing of 'bribed' judges televised


A US-based Ghanaian law professor, H. Kwesi Prempeh has challenged the Judicial Council to televise the hearing of circuit court judges and magistrates in the bribery scandal to boost public confidence in the judiciary.
He strongly believes the ongoing in-camera hearing will further deepen the public mistrust in the judicial system.

Tullow Ghana Flies 41 Scholars Abroad

About 41 Ghanaian scholars have benefitted from this year’s Tullow Group Scholarship Scheme (TGSS).

The annual scholarship scheme, which is in its fifth year and being managed by the British Council Ghana, provides the opportunity for Ghanaians to pursue post-graduate programmes at leading universities in the United Kingdom, Ireland and France.
