No judge is above the law – CJ

The Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood has warned “no judge is above the laws” of Ghana, adding her office is bent on investigating the bribery scandal which has hit the judiciary.

Thirty-four judges have been allegedly caught in the web of corruption to compromise cases before them after a two-year painstaking investigations by undercover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Twenty-two of them, mainly lower court judges, have been suspended as 12 high court justices battle the Judicial Council over the procedure adopted to impeach them.

Although the incriminatory video has brought the judicial arm of government under public ridicule, the chief justice said Ghanaians should not lose confidence in the legal system.

She said no one is bigger than the law and anyone found culpable will be dealt with.

“We gave power to Parliament to come out with laws and those laws are supreme because Ghana is under rule of law, so no judge is above the law,” the CJ said in a statement read on her behalf at the opening of a new circuit court at Awutu Breku in the Central region.
