The Management of Barclays Bank Ghana is rejoicing over the arrest of a fraudster who duped a school boy at the Osu branch of the bank.

Reports had it that the suspect was attempting to dupe another person in another bank when one of the customers recognised him from an earlier CCTV footage of his deeds which had gone viral on social media. The fraudster was caught earlier this year on camera, swindling a JHS student who had been sent to make deposits at one of the Osu branches of Barclays Bank. He duped the victim of GHS3700 at the time.

Police Arrest 41-Year-Old Driver For Murdering Mother

A 41-year-old driver has butchered his 77-year-old mother after accusing her of being responsible for his woes.

In the process, Isaac Adu Gyamfi also inflicted knife wounds on his junior brother, Charles Adu Gyamfi.

The incident happened at Chirapatre Estate, a suburb of Kumasi, at about 4p.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2016.

The trial of Argentina and Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi on tax fraud charges has begun in Spain.
Messi and his father Jorge, who manages his financial affairs, are accused of defrauding Spain of more than €4m (£3m; $4.5m) between 2007 and 2009.
The authorities allege that the two used tax havens in Belize and Uruguay to conceal earnings from image rights.

France labour dispute: Rail workers strike as protests continue

French railway workers are to go on strike as unions continue to protest against planned labour reforms.
This is expected to further disrupt a transport network already suffering from a shortage of fuel.
French President Francois Hollande has insisted he will not back down over the reforms, which aim to make it easier to recruit and dismiss employees.
Public sector workers in neighbouring Belgium are also going on strike on Tuesday over budget cuts.
The national strike there will see police officers, teachers and some civil servants join train drivers and prison guards, who are already on strike.

Ivory Coast international Serge Aurier will be tried on 26 September for an alleged assault on a police officer.

The 23-year-old, who plays for Paris St-Germain, denies the charge and has himself filed a complaint against the police for violence, reports say.

CHRAJ orders Midwifery Council to register pregnant students

Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, (CHRAJ) has ordered the Nursing and Midwifery Council to register all affected pregnant students in the upcoming external licensing examination in August.

The directive comes after three student nurses of the Mampong Nurses and Midwifery Training School in the Ashanti Region were prevented from registering for the examination because they were pregnant.

Alan Pulido: Seized Mexico footballer freed

International football player Alan Pulido has been rescued in north-east Mexico hours after his kidnapping, officials say.
Pulido, 25, appeared with a bandaged hand and told reporters he was "very well".
Officials said the rescue operation was carried out on Sunday night, without giving more details.
The striker plays for the Greek team Olympiakos and has made several appearances for Mexico's national team.
Pulido was kidnapped near Ciudad Victoria, in Tamaulipas state, on Saturday night after leaving a party, officials said in a statement (in Spanish).

Estimating the extent of damage, the national disaster organization said at least over seven thousand lives would be at stake in the event of a flood.

President John Mahama is expected to inaugurate the Komenda sugar factory in the Central Region today.

The factory was established decades ago by the late President Kwame Nkrumah but was later closed down leaving hundreds jobless after some technical and operational challenges.

Overloading caused Volta Lake boat disaster – Police

The Yeji boat disaster on the Volta River that killed six children (all under three years) on Sunday May 29 was caused by overloading, DSP Abraham Bansah, Yeji District Police Commander, has told Class91.3FM’s Executive Breakfast Show host Prince Minkah on Monday May 30.

He has, therefore, suggested that there be naval officers positioned to patrol both ends of the Volta River to ensure that vessel owners do not overload their boats with passengers and load.

Police declared a gathering outside the city's convention centre unlawful and made 35 arrests, as stones and water bottles were thrown.
Mr Trump was in the city near the Mexican border to hold a rally ahead of the 7 June California primary.

U.S. sees first case of bacteria resistant to all antibiotics


U.S. health officials have reported the first case in the country of a patient with an infection resistant to all known antibiotics, and expressed grave concern that the superbug could pose serious danger for routine infections if it spreads.

“We risk being in a post-antibiotic world,” said Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, referring to the urinary tract infection of a 49-year-old Pennsylvania woman who had not travelled within the prior five months.

5 Malian soldiers killed, four wounded in mine explosion

Five Malian soldiers were killed and four wounded on Friday in a mine explosion in northern Mali after two of their vehicles passed over the explosive devices, the Malian army announced.

“Two vehicles of the Malian Armed Forces passed over an improvised explosive device, causing the death of five Malian soldiers and wounding four others between the Ansongo and Indelimane localities,” the Public Relations Division of the Army (DIRPA) said in a statement.

300 people killed by yellow fever in Angola - WHO

Angola's yellow fever outbreak has killed more than 300 people since December, with cases of the deadly disease spreading to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and even China, the World Health Organization has said.

The outbreak was first detected in the capital Luanda at the end of last year, and has now been confirmed in most coastal and central regions of the west African country.

Python in Thai toilet gives man nasty shock

A Thai man is recovering in hospital after a 3m (10ft) python emerged from a squat toilet and sank its fangs into his penis.
Attaporn Boonmakchuay said the python was "yanking very hard" as he and his wife tried to wrestle it off.
Doctors said Mr Attaporn, who lost a lot of blood in the ordeal, was making a good recovery.
Workers dismantled the toilet and extracted the python which had slithered through domestic plumbing.

Google defeats Oracle in Java code copyright case

Google has won a major US court battle with software firm Oracle after a jury ruled it did not unfairly appropriate parts of the Java programming language.
Oracle had argued that Google had infringed its copyright and had sought nearly $9bn (£6bn) in damages.
The outcome was eagerly awaited by software developers who feared that a victory for Oracle might encourage more such legal actions.

China to launch first-ever quantum communication satellite in defence against hackers

Royal Dutch Shell says to axe further 2,200 jobs

London, United Kingdom – Energy giant Royal Dutch Shell on Wednesday said it was cutting at least another 2,200 jobs owing to low oil prices and following its takeover of smaller rival BG Group.
“Shell staff have today been informed about the progress being made on integrating BG into the company, and on further measures that are necessary to ensure Shell is competitive in a ‘lower for longer’ oil price environment,” the Anglo-Dutch group said in a statement.

In June 1998, a retired Hartford, Connecticut Police officer named Peter Getz, carried a young girl to safety away from a building on fire. He rescued 'Josibek Aponte', who was already covered in ash at the time she was found, after the apartment building she and her uncle were living in erupted in flames while they were inside. The young girl was just 5-year-old then, wasn't breathing and didn't have a pulse when she was pulled out.
