I dislike American cars; I prefer Toyota – Mahama

President John Mahama has further clarified claims that he accepted a Ford Expedition gift from a Burkinabe contractor, saying he dislikes American cars.

“I don’t use Fords. I don’t like American cars. I use Japanese cars. Toyota is my car,” the President said during a breakfast meeting with the clergy at the Flagstaff House, Thursday.


The president’s comment comes after he described the allegations that he received a Ford Expedition bribe from the contractor in order to award him contracts as baseless.

According to the President, he is aware of a petition before the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, saying he will respond appropriately.

“It is a matter for the Commission on Human Rights. I hear there is a petition there and appropriately, we will respond to it.”

President Mahama has largely been criticized, especially by members of the opposition for accepting the car gift reportedly worth about US$100,000 from a Burkinabe contractor, who was subsequently awarded a contract from the state.

The contractor was contracted to build a wall, at a cost of over half a million dollars, for the Ghana Embassy in Ouagadougou.

The Burkinabe, Djibril Kanazoe, has admitted giving President Mahama a Ford Expedition vehicle, for which the President called to thank him.
