Trailer rams into 20 cars on N1


Scores of people are injured as a trailer rammed into over 20 vehicles on the George Walker Bush Motorway popularly known as the N1 on Tuesday evening.

An eyewitness who was in a state of shock, told Starrfmonline.com the trailer, which was running at top speed, had a brake failure and in an attempt to veer off the busy motorway for safe parking smashed into moving vehicles which led to spontaneous crashes.
According to the eyewitness, the driver of the trailer, which was facing the Kwashieman-Mallam direction of the road climbed the pavement right in front of the Bank of Africa near a popular bus stop called Hong Kong.

The scene became chaotic around 7pm as a vehicle with passengers caught fire in the process with several onlookers running for their lives. “There were multiple injuries on motorists and passengers during the fire,” the eyewitness said.

The fire and ambulance services including the police arrived at the scene an hour later and managed to douse the fire to rescue some trapped passengers.

The accident led to a heavy gridlock from the Nyamekye Junction to the Kwashieman Traffic Light.

The driver of the trailer bolted before the police came to the scene.

At the time of filing this report, the police were clearing the mangled cars to pave way for smooth traffic.

No death had been confirmed at the time of going to press.
