Five more people have so far been confirmed dead in the Brong Ahafo region following an outbreak of Pneumococcal meningitis, taking the death toll to 27.
Over 60 people have also been hospitalized after they were infected with the deadly pneumococcal meningitis in the region.
Health experts in the area say the latest strain is more contagious and fatal than Cerebrospinal Meningitis.
The outbreak which started last year in the Tain District has also spread to Wenchi, Techiman, Bruohan, Kintampo, and Sene districts in the same region
The Head of the Disease Surveillance Department of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Badu Sarkodie told Citi News surveillance has been heightened to contain the outbreak.
“We have heightened surveillance and all the regions and districts have received alerts to be on high surveillance alert. We are conducting public education in particularly the areas affected.
“We have oriented and sensitized the staff regarding the case management team to manage this adequately so that the best of care will be given to the people that will be affected.”
Dr. Badu added that health service is working with the World Health Organisation to determine when it would be “necessary to use the vaccines, to what extent to vaccinate the whole community and then the criteria to use to get the vaccine.”
