About 41 Ghanaian scholars have benefitted from this year’s Tullow Group Scholarship Scheme (TGSS).

The annual scholarship scheme, which is in its fifth year and being managed by the British Council Ghana, provides the opportunity for Ghanaians to pursue post-graduate programmes at leading universities in the United Kingdom, Ireland and France.

The courses of study under the scheme, which has to date awarded scholarships to 174 Ghanaians, include Water and Environmental Engineering, Marine Spatial Planning, Bio-Technology and Business Enterprise, Journalism, Law and Corporate Social Responsibility.

Tullow Ghana Limited (TGL) accordingly allocates $2.7 million annually towards the implementation of the scheme, which is a major component of its corporate social responsibility.

The 41 lucky scholars from Ghana are part of a total of 74 beneficiaries across the African continent who would pursue various courses for the 2015/2016 academic calendar.

Speaking at a special send off dinner night held at the Movempick Ambassador Hotel in Accra on Wednesday, Managing Director of Tullow Ghana Limited, Charles Darku reiterated that Tullow’s aim of bringing long-lasting sustainable growth to the oil and gas sector and the Ghanaian economy as a whole remained unchanged.

Besides the support Tullow Ghana Limited offers annually to the Ghanaian public through the scholarship scheme, our internal training policy also ensures continuous development of our employees, Mr. Darku said.

According to him, “International on-the-job training for our technical team is ongoing in spite of the declining global crude oil prices.”

TGSS Expanded

Mr. Darku announced that in addition to the post-graduate scheme, Tullow this year introduced a scholarship scheme for technical and vocational training at the pre-tertiary level.

Beneficiaries of the pre-tertiary scheme, he disclosed, have received bursary to attend the Jubilee Technical Training Centre at Takoradi.

According to him, the aim of the pre-tertiary scheme is to support the development of pre-tertiary technical skills, which is part of the immediate needs of the oil and gas industry in the country.

For the 2015/2016 academic year, the global oil giant has awarded 10 scholarships to indigenes of the Western region, an oil producing region to commence this phase of the scholarship scheme, the Managing Director revealed.

Petroleum Minister, Emmanuel A.K. Buah, in a statement read on his behalf, commended Tullow for sustaining the scheme over the years as well as broadening its scope to include programmes at the pre-tertiary level.

Present at the event were representatives of the Ministries of Petroleum and Education, officials of the British Council, past and current awardees of the scheme, families and friends, among others.
