It is embarrassing switching on a generator set for power at home due to the incessant power supply, the Minister for Power has opined.
Dr Kwabena Donkor said he had endured invectives from his neighbours over the situation which has popularly become known as ‘dumsor’.
Speaking on Morning Starr with host Kafui Dey, Monday, Dr Donkor appealed to Ghanaians to exercise restraint although he understands the electricity situation is enervating.
He answered in the affirmative when asked if he feels embarrassed putting on his generator set at night. However, he added “we are working like crazy” to fix the problem.
Dr Donkor has put his job on the line if he is unable to resolve the power crisis by the close of 2015.
The John Mahama-led administration is hoping to take delivery of two power barges in September 2015 and January 2016 to fix the erratic power supply of electricity – a problem that has existed for three years.
Ghana is currently shedding between 400 and 700 Megawatts of power between off-peak and peak times, respectively. The situation has led to job cuts, high expenditure, among others.
Three popular Ghanaian screen icons – Yvonne Nelson, Sarkodie and Lydia Forson - are championing a vigil to put pressure on the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to solve the crisis.
The vigil dubbed #dumsormuststop is expected to come off May 16.
