Students in Uganda Manufacture First Hybrid Car

East Africa’s first hybrid vehicle, the KIIRA EV SMACK, which is being developed by Uganda, has gone on its maiden public display in Kenya. The vehicle went on show at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in the capital Nairobi early Thursday, 13th November, 2014

This is the first time the car goes on exhibition outside Uganda. Hybrid-electric vehicles combine the benefits of gasoline engines and electric motors and can be configured to obtain different objectives, such as improved fuel economy, increased power, or additional ancillary power for electronic devices and power tools. Its braking system turns the heat produced into energy that charges the battery unlike the conventional brakes.

The launch was attended by Uganda’s High Commissioner to Kenya, Angelina Wapakhabulo, after which a test drive was done at the KICC grounds.

This is not the first time the students of Makerere University are manufacturing a car. In 2011, the students conducted a 4km test-drive on its KIIRA EV, a two-seater vehicle that runs on rechargeable lithium batteries instead of petrol. Its makers say that in motorway conditions, the $35,000 KIIRA EV can attain a speed of 100km/h and cover 80km (50 miles) before it needs recharging.
