A Tarkwa Circuit Court on Monday sentenced Kwadow Amadu, a 40 year-old mason to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour for assaulting and attempting to rape a 42 year-old widow.
The accused pleaded guilty.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Florence Tawiah told the court, presided by Mr. Justice Obeng Asante that, the complainant, Madam Magdalene Kwofie, is a food vendor at Ahwetieso and lived in the same vicinity with Amadu.
She said around 1930 hours on December 7, this year, the complainant was alone in her room watching a programme on television when Amadu, who is her friend and a widower, entered the room without knocking.
Chief Inspector Tawiah said the complainant rebuked the accused for his uncultured behavior and asked him to leave the room immediately.
She said Amadu who felt insulted, pounced on the complainant on the floor and he tore a pair of shorts she was wearing and attempted to have sexual intercourse with her.
Chief Inspector Tawiah said the complainant struggled with the convict and managed to run outside but because her apartment was isolated from the Ahwetieso Township, Amadu was able get hold of her and beat her mercilessly and left her helpless.
She said later the complainant shouted for help and some people in the area came to her aid and after she had narrated her ordeal to them, a search party was organized and found Amadu that same day and he was sent to the Tarkwa Police Station together with the complainant.
The Prosecutor said the complainant reported the matter to the police and she was issued with a medical report form to attend hospital for treatment.
Chief Inspector Tawiah said Amadu, in his cautioned statement, admitted having attempted to rape the complainant but he denied assaulting her.
