TRAGIC:Fatal East Orange fire, At least 3 dead, including 6-month-old, official says

EAST ORANGE — At least three people, including a 6-month-old child, were killed by a fire that broke out on North 17th Street this morning, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

Anthony Ambrose, the chief of detectives for the prosecutor's office, said three people died in the fire, including two adults and the child. He did not release any other details about the victims. Ambrose said two other people are still unaccounted for.

East Orange spokeswoman Connie Jackson said six people lived in the home at 16 North 17th Street. A woman who was rescued from the third floor this morning suffered minor smoke inhalation, Jackson said.

The fire broke out around 6 a.m. when strong winds were blowing through the area.

"Wind definitely had a major impact in helping drive the fire,” said Chris Weiss, deputy chief of the East Orange Fire Department.

Weiss called the structural conditions of the fire-damaged homes "very serious," saying that the rear sections of the properties had collapsed. He said search and rescue effort would be extensive.

Two neighboring homes, one of which was vacant, were also damaged in the fire, Jackson said. One person who lived at 18 North 17th Street escaped the property without injuries, Jackson said.
