Godsway Brahini, deceased
The Legon District Police have mounted a search for a hit-and-run driver for allegedly knocking down three schoolchildren, killing one.
The unidentified lady, who was driving a white Tundra vehicle, was said to have stopped after hitting the children while they were crossing the road but bolted when she saw that they were unconscious.
The children were crossing the street at the Trinity Junction on the UPS-Bawaleshie road on their way home from an excursion.
The Legon District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Emmanuel Basintali, said one of the children died on the spot while the two others sustained injuries.
The deceased has since been identified as 10-year-old Godsway Brahini, while the two who are receiving treatment at the University Hospital are Adams Abdallah Najinudeen, 11, and Dorson Robert, 10.
Mr Basintali said the police received information about 7 p.m. yesterday that three children had been knocked down by a vehicle.
“The police rushed to the scene and found one of the boys dead but the other two who sustained various degrees of injury were taken to the University Hospital where they are still on admission,” he said.
Eyewitnesses brief police
He said some eyewitnesses told the police that they had signalled the driver of the vehicle that knocked down the children to stop and she stopped at a distance from where the incident had happened.
“According to the eyewitnesses, when she came out of her car and saw the children unconscious in the middle of the road, she went back to her car and sped off,” he added.
The father of the deceased, Mr Gabriel Brahini, said his son left home in the morning for the excursion but had not returned as of 6:30 p.m.
“So I went to the school to find out if they had not returned from the excursion,” he said.
At the school, he said he found out that his son had returned with the first bus “and so I thought we might have missed each other but I returned home and he was not at home. At that time I started getting worried”.
He said a few minutes later he heard that some children had been knocked down by a vehicle and he later heard that his son was involved.
