Rurik Jutting, the man arrested in the "American Psycho" killings in Hong Kong, was depressed and had tried to kill himself, a reported ex-girlfriend said.
The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, told Channel 4 News Jutting confided his suicidal thoughts to her in October 2013.
"I think he tried to kill himself because he's under pressure with his job," she said of the former Bank of America employee. "He was depressed."
Jutting, 29, was charged Monday in Hong Kong with the murders of two women believed to be sex workers, including one woman found stuffed inside a suitcase on the balcony of his apartment.
Suicidal thoughts would possibly shed some light on Jutting's out-of-office email reply at Bank of America, where he quit about a week ago.
"I am out of the office. Indefinitely," the message read. "For urgent enquiries, please contact someone who is not an insane psychopath. For escalation please contact God, though suspect the devil will have custody (last line only really worked if I had followed through)."
The ex-girlfriend, who said she dated Jutting for two month starting in July 2013, said she was shocked by the news because "he was such a nice person."
Jutting is a "perfectionist" who was "strict with other people," she said. "Every time we met he was always stressed because of work. He told me that he had financial problems and some issues with stuff."
The murders have been compared to the novel "American Psycho" in which the main character, an investment banker, kills multiple people in his luxury apartment.
One of the women found in Jutting's apartment is Sumarti Ningsih, who was found in a suitcase partially decapitated, according to court documents. She was an Indonesian sex worker and mother of two who was killed on Oct. 27
Jesse Lorena had been spotted with Jutting multiple times and told friends Friday night she was headed to a Halloween party.
The other victim is thought to be Jesse Lorena, who had been seen with Jutting multiple times, Channel 4 News reported.
Police said they also found sex toys and a a small amount of cocaine in Jutting's apartment.
Jutting, who made six figures as a banker, is in custody until a Nov. 10 hearing.
