We re in shock : New York woman beheaded by son
The woman who was beheaded in New York yesterday has been identified as a well-liked professor at Farmingdale State College, in Long Island.

Patricia Ward, 66, taught language arts, said Patrick Calabria, the vice president of institutional advancement at the college.

"We are in shock", he told The New York Post.

"The staff in her department is teary-eyed. We are providing counselling to the staff who need it. It's a very sad day. A lot of people are taking it very hard."Ward was beheaded by her 35-year-old son Derek, who lived with her, claimed a source.

He dragged her body out of their apartment and into the street where he allegedly kicked her severed head across the street before jumping in front of an train, police and witnesses said.

His body found about 1.5 kilometres from the scene of the murder, said police.

Many of the horrified witnesses initially believed that the headless body was an elaborate Halloween prank, only to find out it was indeed real after attempting to lift the beheaded body."Mr Ward has a psychiatric history dating back approximately 10 years. It exacerbated itself within the last year.", said Detective Lieutenant John Azzat.

"I knew something wasn't exactly normal, but I don’t like to judge", said a neighbour of the Wards.

"You'd notice they were always together. I didn’t know if he lived with his mom because he was in some sort of mental state."

In 2006, he was charged with possession of a gun and 100 Valium pills and was sentenced to 45 days in prison, police sources said.
